Types of Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is a unique sport that can be done in a variety of forms. In can be done indoors on a specialized structure or outside on a cliff that rises thousands of feet into the sky. Below you will be introduced to the various types of rock climbing adventures that are available.

Basic Rock Climbing: This is the most popular form of rock climbing for the true adventurer. It is done outdoors with specialized safety equipment. Scaling a rock wall the traditional rock climber places “steps” as he ascends upwards. These “steps” or wedges are placed inside the rock walls cracks. Rock climbers must attach the rope to the wedges in order to have an available “safety net” if he should fall. This rope will save his life and catch him if this should happen.

Climbing Indoors: This is done on a fabricated structure with already placed wedges to scale the wall easier.

Climbing for Sport: This type of rock climbing offers the wedges bolted into the rock.

Free Solo Rock Climbing: The most dangerous form of rock climbing, as no rope is used.

Climbing Ice: This is climbing on any ice surface, such as a frozen waterfall. Specialty wedges are needed for this type of climbing.
