Most of us who live in rural or estate areas are very familiar with the world of smashed mailboxes. Every now and then there will be a group of young yahoos from the local area that will think it’s a great idea to ride in the back of pickup trucks in the middle of the night, and bash roadside mailboxes as they go by.
On the other side there are two groups of homeowners. One group has resigned themselves to the fact that this will be a common occurrence in their neighborhood, and simply put up the cheapest mailboxes they can find.
The second group of homeowners believe that your mailbox should match the decor of your yard, and they continually search for the nicest mailboxes and posts to enhance their yards.
Of course the second group does not take the mailbox bashing episodes very lightly. In fact they believe that they are in an out and out war against the bashers.
To support this second group, mailbox manufacturers have been designing heavy duty reinforced steel mailboxes that can easily withstand any baseball bat.
You would think that the story should end here, but it doesn’t. Now the highway safety folks have issued guidelines to protect the motorists, should they have the misfortune of crashing into one of these fortified mailboxes.
Apparently there have been cases where mailboxes have come through car windows and injured the passangers.
Where will it all end?
